Melissa Tran's video 'My Own Sorrow(s)' (2013) is a continuation of the explorations of cycles through culture and language featuring the artist in the process of breaking the tough spiky exterior of a durian to reveal the soft, fleshy meat of the fruit. While peeling the fruit, Tran attempts to pronounce the fruit’s name, sau rieng, in Vietnamese, which literally translates into English as “my own sorrow”.
