The Day I Met Aunty Hannah
During my second year of graduate school I went home to Trinidad to visit my family for the summer holiday. On the day I arrived, my family received notice that my Grandmother’s sister, Aunty Hannah, passed away. Though I never met Aunty Hannah in her life, learning about her through her passing felt like my understanding and connection to my matrilineal family expanded. On this day, family I’ve known all my life and ones I’ve never met gathered around Aunty Hannah to remember her and support one another in her loss. I had the immense privilege of taking this intimate series of photos as both an insider and outsider—part of the family but not very well known in it.
