The Head Flung from the Body Opens is a new work that reconfigures defensive coverings for the body used by police and military into speculative bio-armor for people of color that can resist cultures of violence and oppression and instead activate gestures of collective healing and liberation. The project emerges from real world ballistic armor plates used by military and law enforcement known within the industry as‘trauma plates’. The work begins by confronting the irony of the terminology in relation to the individual and collective trauma that state control has upon individuals and communities of color, and transfigures these forces of violence into conditions that can propagate racial equity and ecological regeneration and push for
modes of reclaiming collective technological futures.
